Tips for Removing a Tree From Your Garden

You might want to remove a tree from your property for different reasons. It may be unstable, or you're building an extension where the tree stands. Before you remove it, however, you should check with your local council to see if a permit is necessary. Here are several other tips.

Space and Access

Arborists cut down trees in different ways, depending on the space they have. They can't fell a tree in a backyard as if it were in an open paddock. They don't want to damage the house or cause injuries. Thus, the tree will be dismantled slowly, which will add to the cost of the removal.

You should clear the access to the tree you want to cut down as much as possible. Clear away nearby potted plants and garden furniture. If the tree is in the backyard, do you have better access via a laneway behind the property? A tree in a spacious front garden will typically cost less to remove than a tree in a cramped position beside a house.

The difficulty of the job will also depend on the size of the tree. A small tree will be simpler and safer to remove than a large, well-entrenched one.

Quiet and Busy Times

Arborists have busy and slow times, like many companies, and you may get a cheaper rate during quiet times. If they're overloaded with work, they may quote accordingly. On the other hand, an arborist may want your job more during quiet times and give a better price.

Sometimes winter is quieter unless you have just experienced a major storm that has damaged multiple trees around the neighbourhood. The conditions need to be reasonable, though, because extreme wind and rain can put the arborist in danger. If the tree is threatening to fall over or you are rebuilding on that spot, a possible delay to save money may not be an option.

Disposing of the Tree

Another thing to consider is how to dispose of the tree. You could request that the arborist take it, and this can bring down the cost of the tree removal if they sell the lumber. Alternatively, you could ask them to cut it into small logs useful for firewood, which you could use, sell or give away.

The stump can provide mulch. It can be ground into pieces after the tree is gone, and you can spread the wood chips around the garden. One species that can't be mulched is palm trees, as they're too acidic.
